What Is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting describes a variety of techniques used to increase the amount of bone in a patient’s jaw. After a patient loses a tooth, their body starts reabsorbing the bone that used to house it, so that part of the jaw becomes thinner and weaker.
A dentist will always examine a candidate for a dental implant to make sure they have enough bone to support the implant. If they don’t, then they will need a bone implant. The dentist may use a synthetic material, bone taken from the patient’s body, or bone taken from a donor. They may also use human growth factors to stimulate the growth of new bone.
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is used in sedation dentistry to keep the patient calm and relaxed during their appointment. The patient will wear a mask over their nose and breathe in the gas. Unlike stronger sedatives, nitrous oxide won’t put the patient to sleep, so they will still be able to respond to the dentist. The gas wears off almost as soon as the patient takes the mask off, so they will be able to drive themselves home.
What is Opalescence?
Opalescence is a gel used for at-home tooth whitening. The patient can choose from three flavors: regular, mint, and melon. The gel contains potassium nitrate and fluoride, which help the enamel remain strong during the whitening process.
Opalescence also comes in four concentrations. The strongest requires the patient to wear it for only 30 minutes a day, while the weakest needs to be worn overnight.
